Money laundering offences news 11/08/09 Bath writer convicted on drugs, firearms and money laundering charges

A comedy writer from Bath has been convicted of money laundering offences, alongside drugs and firearms charges.

Paul Alexander, 53, admitted to possessing firearms, prohibited ammunition and the proceeds of crime, and to conspiring to cultivate cannabis, but denied further firearms charges which remain on the files of the Crown Prosecution Service. The writers barrister, Julian Goose QC, conceded that A lengthy custodial sentence is inevitable at his clients sentencing, which is to take place in September.

Alexanders wife, Caroline Hunter-Mann-Purdy, also admitted money laundering, as did one of her daughters; another daughter admitted conspiracy to cultivate cannabis. Two other people denied the allegations against them, and were discharged as no evidence was brought against them.

The family was arrested in a dramatic police raid on an Essex country house in summer 2008, which involved controlled explosions and a five-day search. The operation against firearms and money laundering offences was a joint operation between local police and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA).
