Proceeds of crime news 16/11/2009 Money laundering fear over mans car cash
A man who was carrying £8,000 cash in order to buy a car became a money laundering suspect after he joked on a train that he was also carrying a gun.
The passenger on a London to Cardiff train who caused the incident was in the trains buffet car when a member of staff saw his wallet was stuffed with £50 notes. After she commented on the cash, the man then said he also carried a gun.
The woman alerted British Transport Police which resulted in Bristol Parkway station being closed as armed police arrested the man, who they believed could have been handling the proceeds of crime.
The man apologised and was cautioned under railway by-laws for interfering with the comfort of fellow passengers.
A transport police sergeant said the passenger, who did not have a weapon, was arrested on suspicion of money laundering but was found to be carrying the cash legitimately to buy a car in the Bristol area. News «
