Proceeds of crime news 01/12/2009 Illegal dumper who took money falsely must repayA demolition company boss, who illegally dumped waste including asbestos, has been ordered to repay some of his criminal profits in a prosecution under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 brought by the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
The man, who was jailed for 16 months in 2007 for the offences, was ordered by Bradford Crown Court to pay £176,519 within six months or face a further prison term of 27 months. He was said to have benefited by £1,721,760 from his crimes derived from payments made by building companies across Yorkshire which believed the demolition company was disposing of the material legitimately. Environment Agency officers investigated the companys activities after they became aware of illegal tipping on council-owned land at Low Moor, Bradford and put the site under surveillance. At least 200 lorry-loads were involved. Environmental crime officer at the Environment Agency Paul Glasby said, This is a great result. Waste crime is unacceptable. It puts people and the environment at risk and undermines legitimate businesses. Ian Cruxton, the Serious Organised Crime Agencys deputy director of proceeds of crime, said the business was founded on illegal activity and exploited peoples good faith for the mans own benefit.
