Proceeds of crime news 15/09/2008 Operation Mundesley to combat money laundering in Norfolk
The Norfolk Constabulary has launched an operation to combat suspected cases of money laundering, following reports of suspicious transactions being made to the police force.
The project, named Operation Mundesley, is a response to several instances of people being offered sums of up to £40,000 in cash for goods and services. Norfolks Detective Chief Inspector, Steve Strong, asked local businesses to be alert to cash - particularly used £20 notes - being offered where a cheque or credit card would have been expected, as this may be an attempt to clean the proceeds of crime.
Strong also made an appeal for information that may support this anti-money laundering investigation, asking the public to telephone 0845 456 4567 and mention Operation Mundesley. He told local press that, Any information would be helpful as it could help police piece together a chain of criminal activities and lead to those responsible.
A previous investigation led by the Norfolk force resulted in jail sentences totalling more than 40 years for a gang whose offences included money laundering and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Regarding this earlier case, a spokesperson said, This is an excellent result which demonstrates the Constabularys ability and commitment to tackle complex and protracted investigations.
