Money laundering offences news 24/03/2009 Labour group drops councillor following money laundering arrest

A Labour councillor has been removed from Calderdale Councils Labour group after being named in money laundering inquiries.

Zafar Iqbal-Din was arrested, interviewed and bailed by police earlier this month over the activities of a man he described as a friend, who was arrested in February over suspected money laundering activity. Din said that the friend had borrowed money from approximately 15 people for a large deposit on a house, all of whom had been questioned by the police examining the activity for breaches of the Money Laundering Regulations 2007.

He assured constituents that the investigation did not result from his council activities, nor affected them.

The leader of the Councils Labour group, Tim Swift, said last Friday, I have informed the Councils chief executive Councillor Din is no longer a member of the Labour group. Din is not due for re-election until 2010, however, so remains an independent councillor.

The council declined to comment on the case while the money laundering investigation was in progress.
