Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 news 10/08/09 Confiscation order for £42K served on Stevenage mechanic
28/07/09 A Stevenage mechanic has been ordered to repay a five-figure sum under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, reflecting the estimated value of his earnings from the sale of stolen motorcycles.
Gary Smith, 38, was found guilty of possessing criminal property, handling stolen goods and fraud in 2008, and received a nine-month suspended prison sentence and 250 hours of unpaid work. The confiscation order, which was issued this week, is for £42,400 plus £7,500 in compensation to people who bought stolen high-performance motorcycles from his Stevenage business.
A police spokesperson from the Eastern Area Money Laundering Unit said Nobody should benefit from crime, and I am satisfied that Smith has been ordered to pay more than £40,000 for his offences. His actions meant a number of people, who thought they were buying a motorcycle in good faith, were actually getting stolen property.
A percentage of the money reclaimed under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 will go to the police force to help fight money laundering in the East of England. News « Confiscation order for £42K served on Stevenage mechanic
