Anti-money laundering news 18/11/08 Money laundering support website under virus attack

Anti-money laundering website Bobbear has been hit by a distributed denial of service attack, making it unavailable just as the Get Safe Online campaign was launched in the UK.

The sites administrator, Bob Harrison, believes the attack on his pages is a deliberate attempt to thwart his success; he said, Undoubtedly it is a response to the work I do in highlighting the mainly Russian money laundering and reshipping frauds that are currently plaguing the internet and wrecking the lives of innumerable victims.

Sophos, the anti-virus software manufacturer, agreed by saying, They must be having an impact on the fraudsters if they are prepared to launch an attack like this.

A distributed denial of service attack is when virus-infected computers around the world all start to visit the website at once, causing a metaphorical logjam that prevents authentic visitors from reaching the site.

When available, the site provides information for individual victims, rather than the large firms who can train and employ expert money laundering reporting officers. It therefore explains ways in which money laundering practices can be spotted and avoided, names particular email-based schemes that people may fall for, and offers strong advice on not falling foul of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 or any other anti-money laundering legislation.
